The Canadian Evaluation Society invites you to submit a proposal for a workshop at the 2016 annual conference being held from June 5th to June 8th in St. John’s. The preconference workshops will take place on Sunday, June 5th, with post-workshops on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 8th, 2016. The conference theme is Evaluation on the Edge.  Details on the conference theme can be found here.  Submissions should be related to one of the conference sub-themes.

These workshops will offer training to participants from the perspectives of professional competencies development, reinforcement, and advancement. The activities must therefore meet current standards of knowledge and skills in the field of program evaluation.

With this in mind, any professional, professor or practitioner, Canadian or from abroad, is invited to submit a relevant, original and innovative proposal.

Deadline to Submit Workshop Proposals

The deadline to submit a workshop proposal is December 11th at 11:59 PM EST.

Selection Criteria

The independent review committee will evaluate each proposal based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of the topic (fits into the themes or is accompanied by a justification of its relevance) – 20%
  • Goal clarity and realism – 20%
  • Clarity and realism of teaching/learning strategies – 20%
  • Workshop facilitator’s expertise and experience on subject matter as well as facilitation (subject expertise; excellent communication experience, etc.) – 20%
  • Global quality of the proposal (original and innovative) – 20%

Workshop Dates

Workshops will be held on Sunday, June 5th and the afternoon of Wednesday, June 8th.  They will be delivered in the language of submission (English or French). There will not be simultaneous translation offered for Workshops. There are four time slots for Workshops:

  • Full Day – 9:00am to 4:00pm (Sunday, June 5th only)
  • Morning – 9:00am to 12:00pm  (Sunday, June 5th only)
  • Afternoon – 1:00pm to 4:00pm (Either Sunday, June 5th or Wednesday, June 8th)

Technology

A data projector, PC laptop, screen and flip charts will be provided. If facilitators need additional equipment, please inform the Committee to discuss whether these can be provided.

Workshop Topics

Following extensive consultation and review of existing needs assessment studies and the competencies required to obtain the designation of Credentialed Evaluator, the Organizing Committee has identified the following priority Workshop topics. The Committee remains open to suggestions for workshops on other themes.

We are particularly interested in intermediate and advanced level workshops. We are also interested in workshops that focus on innovative and emerging evaluation thinking, approaches and tools that are in tune with our conference theme of “Evaluation on the Edge”.

Proposed Workshop Topics are listed below:

1. Data collection and analysis

  • Quantitative analysis
  • Qualitative analysis
  • Data trustworthiness
  • Using big data / social media
  • Surveys
  • Combined analysis/triangulation
  • Research design

2. Evaluation management

  • Consulting skills
  • People skills
  • Project management
  • Communicating results
  • Evaluation planning/evaluability assessment

3. Qualitative data collection and analysis

  • Case studies
  • Secondary data sources
  • In-depth interviews, focus groups
  • Document and literature reviews

4. Reflective Practice

  • Evaluation theories and models
  • Program theory and logic models
  • Emerging methods (e.g. collective impact analysis)
  • Standards and ethics
  • Evaluation context

5. Economic/al evaluation

  • Cost analyses
  • Rapid assessment methodologies
  • Performance measurement systems

6. Evaluation challenges and innovations in specific sectors and with specific populations

  • Examples of sectors: justice, sustainable development, environment, health/ mental health, community-based interventions, education, international, etc.
  • Examples of specific populations: Aboriginal/First Nations, high risk youth, LGBTQ, those experiencing homelessness, etc.

7. Other Subjects

Any proposition relevant to evaluators’ needs and/or the CE Competencies.

Compensation

In recognition of the additional work involved in planning and delivering a workshop, CES will offer:

  • For Facilitating a Half-day workshop: 50% reduced registration fee, for the CES 2016 Conference, for one facilitator
  • For Facilitating a Full-day workshop: 100% reduced registration fee, for the CES 2016 Conference, for one facilitator
  • Should facilitators be in a position to decline the registration fee waiver, please feel free to do so.
